Before doing this assignment, I believed that communication and business were related to each other in some way. I thought they were a good combination and that is why I decided to make those two my areas of concentration, but I was still unsure of exactly how they related to each other and the jobs I could get by having knowledge in these two areas. However, I now have a better understanding of how communication and business are related to each other and to my future goals.

            I have found that these two areas of concentration are indeed a great combination and are related in many ways. My two areas of concentration are “Human Communication” and “Business Management.” One may ask, “How are these two areas related?” in reality, these two areas are extremely related, more than anyone could imagine. That is because both areas require contact and communicating with people. In communication, I have studied communication styles, effective communication, conflict management, communication in personal and interpersonal relationships, communication modes (i.e. channels), and even communicating in the business setting. COM 259: Communication in the business professions is a class that showed me the importance o communication in a business. Moreover, through my business classes I have learned about finance, management, realty and marketing. Most importantly, how essential communication is in business. Good communication creates and allows individuals to maintain good relationships with employees, manager, co-workers and the like. A business could not operate without humans; and, where there are humans—communication is present and essential. Learning concepts such as communication styles and the social penetration theory helps managers get to know their employees to keep the good ones and create a good working environment. It also helps them create good business relationships with their clients and other businesses. Effective communication is helpful towards good marketing skills to be able to get good business. Good communication skills are important and effective in advertising. It is also very important in a company when delivering speeches, promoting, giving interviews, being interviewed, advertising, hiring, etc. Communication relates to business because having communication knowledge allows business people to make excellent interviews, present professional speeches, etc. Especially speeches, since they are a big part of being a business person. Therefore it is important to know how to deliver a well organized and professional speech. You see, communication is not only about verbal communication ; learning about nonverbal communication is also important in businesses, especially because they encounter people from all over the world and many times the signs/symbols or words do not always mean the same in all countries.

            Furthermore, we have seen how the areas relate to each other. Now, it is time to see how they relate to my future goals. Well, my goals are to work in a big company; start as a manager and work my way up. I want to be around a lot of people. But, I also want to be able to dress in business attire. Then, I want to have my own businesses such as a beauty salon and dance school. I enjoy helping people out, so maybe I would like to work as some type of counselor. I also want to attend law school and become a civil, commercial or immigration lawyer. Finally, my goal is to open a law firm. However, if at the end I decide to not attend law school, I want to have other doors open; a career that I enjoy. I believe that business and communication is very big here in Arizona, and here is where I plan to live. Therefore, I have many choices to where I can work. Fortunately, business and communication relates to all my future goals. No matter what I decide to do, this degree will serve me well. Being an attorney requires having a good communication background since I will always be working around people. And whether I work in a company or have my own businesses, I must have some sort of business background in order to be successful in everything I do. Moreover, I plan to find an internship in a law firm because it is a business and communication background is also needed; not only that, but it will help me decide if a lawyer is in reality what I want to be later in my life. These two areas will also serve me well in my personal life; for example, in my relationships and to be able to manage my finances well. With knowledge in business and communication, I can find a job almost anywhere and be very creative with it. For example, I can have a job in marketing, accounting, management, counselor, I can be a business woman, have my own businesses, work in a big company, a small company, a radio station in the sales or marketing, and in many other places.

            In conclusion, I find that I will have many opportunities with this degree. I believe they are a good combination and are very well related to each other. I find myself more confident of where my life will go and why I decided to study business and communication. Clearly, a business without good communication is no business and poor communication skills mean no business.
