There are many skills that are essential to be successful at a job or career. The following are only five of my key skills. The skills that I believe are important; they have been very important to me in the different jobs that I have held and I am sure they will be very important to achieve all my goals at my future job, after obtaining my BIS degree. I have worked in a couple of different places and they have been important skills to have. I believe they will be very useful to me for when I obtain my ultimate goal which is to be a business woman and be a lawyer.

Communication: to me this is one of the most important skills. Communication is essential in every career; that is because without communication humans good not accomplish anything. Also, having strong communication skills helps improve relationships, solve problems constructively, learn new cultures, understand each other, get ideas across, accomplish goals, be successful as an individual, company, team, etc., avoid future problems and the like. It has been through communication that I have resolved issues at work, learn new things, decrease misunderstandings, got things done and so on. For example, being a cosmetologist means that I am communicating with different people at a daily basis. Without communication I would not be able to know what kind of cut, color, hairstyle a client wants, and it has helped me make people happy and good about themselves.

Learning and Listening: While being two different skills, I believe that these two skills go hand in hand. One cannot truley learn without listening or listen without learning something new. For example, I was a nanny to four children for one-year. Two of the children had Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) which meant more responisbility to learn new things to care for them correctly. For example, I had to use my listening skill and learning skill when the therapists taught me how the boys' therapies were done, since I was responsible for their therapies on a daily basis. Without these two skills I would have never learned to properly do such therapies and care for those wonderful children. This skill will aslo be important to me as a business woman and lawyer. That is because I will be constantly learning to better my businessess, to resolve problems and to better the business. In addition, lawyers are constantly learning due to new laws and the like, therefore learning and listening are extremely important in my future careers.

Writing: this is also an important skill. Writing, especially creative writing opens our minds to new ideas. This skill is especially important for me since I plan to be an attorney. It will also modify my way of thinking so that I can adapt to and handle new situations; as well as solving issues through different perspectives.

Computer Skills: technology is everywhere today, it just cannot be avoided. And it will keep on improving in the future. Therefore, it is important to have at least basic computer skills so that we are not left behind because it is no secret that we live in a technology driven world and we rely much on it. I like the computer. It does make things easier. For example, it has been so reliable for me in writing well informed research papers. Every time I have a question about something, I find the answer on the internet in academic journals or the like. Programs such as powerpoint, excel, word, etc. are very useful to know how to use. And those are just the basic programs, because computer knowledge and software as well as typing fairly fast will be essential in my business and career as a lawyer.

Team Work: this is also important because no matter where we work, we will always be surrounded by co-workers. We must know how to work in teams effectively because it is impossible for one person to run a whole business by himself/herself. Sure, there must be a leader but he/she must have others working with him/her to better the business, help it grow, and be successful. I have learned throughout my education and work experience that great team work is what gets things done and what differentiates a good business from a bad one. It is the coming and working together of people, which also serves as a way of getting to know others, helping build relationships and learn new cultures.
